Establishment of Indian Railway

Indian Railway was founded on 8 May 1845. Indian Railway’s first train whose name was “Red Hill Railway” ran from Red Hills to the Chintadripet bridge present in Chennai. This was India’s first train built in 1837.

This train was built by “Arthur Cotton”.  The Red Hill Railway train was used for the transportation of granite for the purpose of road building.

The first proposal of India railways of India was made in 1832 in Chennai.

In 1845 Arthur Cotton built another train for the transportation of stones for the dam construction over the Godavari river. This train was named as “Godavari Dam Construction Railway”.  This is built at Dowleswaram present in Rajahmundry.

India’s first passenger Train:

India’s first passenger Train ran on 16 April 1853 between Bori Bunder (Mumbai) and Thane. This trains had 14 carriages and 34 kilometers with 400 passengers.

This train was hauled by three steam locomotives named Sahib, Sultan, and Sindh.

South India’s first passenger train ran from Royapuram Veyasarapady present in Chennai to Wallajah Road Arcot on 1st July 1856. This train ran for 97 km/60 miles.

Eastern India’s first passenger train ran on 15 August 1854 from Howrah to Hoogly. This train ran for 39 km/24 miles.

Organizational Structure of India Railways

Ministry of Railways operates the Indian Railways. For the proper operational handling of Indian Railways, seven-member Railway Board is present. This board is having one chairman. The chairman then reports to the Ministry of Railways.

The regional zone wise organization of Indian Railways started at 1951 when the Southers, Central and Western zones were created. Southern zone created at 14 April 1951, Central at 5 November 1951 and Western at 5 November 1951.

Indian Railway is divided into 17 zones. Each zone is having one head as a general manager who reports to the Railway Board.

Each zone is further subdivided into 68 operating zones. Each operating zone is having a Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).

Indian Railway Staff System

In Indian Railways, the staff is divided into two types of employees:

  1. Gazetted – Group A and Group B
  2. Non-Gazetted – Group C and Group D

Gazetted staff performs the managerial, executive and supervisorial level of tasks.

Indian Railways Recruitment

Union Public Service Commission recruits the Group A employees by examination.

Group B employees are recruited by promoting the Group C employees by way of seniority cum eligibility using its selection process.

Railway Recruitment Board conducts the recruitment of Group C and junior engineers and depot material superintendents.

Railway Recruitment Control Board (RRCB) controls the 21 railway recruitment boards and cells present in Indian Railways. These 21 railway recruitment boards recruit Group C and Group D employees.

There are 295 training centers and 7 centralized zonal training institutes present in India. The training of all the group’s employees is conducted within these centers.

Indian Railways Electrification

Indian Railways has electrified about 33,057 km of route kilometers and 55,240 km of the total running track, as of 31 March 2018.

Indian Railway uses 25 kV AC traction for all its tracks which are currently electrified.

The first electric train in India ran on 3 February 1925 between Bombay Victoria Terminus and Kurla on the Harbour Line at 1500 V DC.

Various Travel Classes in Indian Railways

There are several travel classes present in India Railways. These classes are with or without air-conditioning. One train may have one or many travel classes.

Some trains like Garib Rath Express, Duronto Express, Double Decker Express, Shatabdi Express, Rajdhani Express, Humsafar Express, Tejas Express, and Yuva Express have only air-conditioned classes.

While the slow passenger trains have non-air-conditioning classes and unreserved seating.

Fairs of these trains differ as per the classes. AC classes have higher fare as compared to unreserved seating.

There are numbers of compartments present in one train. A standers passenger train may have four general compartments, two at the front and two at the rear.

One of these compartments may be reserved for women.

The number of coaches varies as per the demand and the route of a train.

Travel Class Information
1A AC First Class– This is the most expensive and the most luxurious travel class of Indian Railway. This air-conditioned coach only present in popular routes can carry 18 full or 10 half coach. This coach has bedding included in the fare and has an attendant.
EA Anubhuti – This is also air-conditioned travel class of Shatabdi Express. The first train having this class is Chennai Central Mysore Shatabdi Express. The coaches with this class were introduced in January 2018.
2A AC Two Tier – This is also an air-conditioned class having sleeping berths across eight bays.
FC First Class – This class is similar to 1A but not having an air-conditioning. Bedding is not available in this class and also the berths are narrower than 1A.
3A AC Three Tier – This is an air-conditioning class with the 64 sleeping berths. Its berths are similar to 2A but with three tiers across the width and two lengthwise for eight bays of eight.
3E AC Three Tier (Economy) – This is air-conditioned class having coaches with a sleeping berth in Garib Rath Express.
EC Executive chair car –  This is an air-conditioned class having a coach with seats.
CC AC chair car – This is an air-conditioned class having a coach with five seats in a row, used for the intercity day travel.
SL Sleeper class – This is non-air-conditioned class and is the most common coach in Indian Railway.
2S Second seater – This is similar to the CC class but without air-conditioning.
UR/GEN Unreserved/General – This is the cheapest class with a seat not guaranteed.

Tejas Express This is a semi-high-speed train with air-condition
Rajdhani Express This is a linking state capital to national capital train with limited-stop and air-conditioned.
Gatimaan Express This is the first semi-high-speed and air-conditioned train which is running in between Jhansi and Delhi
Duronto Express This is non-stop service train with air-conditioned one, two and three-tier seating, some have non-air-conditioned sleeper-class accommodations.
Humsafar Express This is an air-conditioned, three-tier coach trains having LED screens which display information about stations and train speed. This train also has CCTV cameras, PA system, smoke alarms, vending machines for tea and coffee,bio-toilets, charging ports for electronic devices, curtains and heating and refrigeration facilities for food.
AC Express This is an air-conditioned train with limited stops and links to the major cities.
Uday Express This is an air-conditioned double-decker train for overnight travel.
Double Decker Express This is an air-conditioned, two-tier express, limited-stop train for daytime travel
Garib Rath Express This is an air-conditioned, three-tier,  economy train
